Get Ready for an Exciting New Chapter in Scouting with AdvanceCamp!

Get Ready for an Exciting New Chapter in Scouting with AdvanceCamp!
The Golden Gate Area Council (GGAC) and AdvanceCamp, Inc. are thrilled to announce their merger, following unanimous votes by both boards. This strategic alliance will see AdvanceCamp forming a new committee within our GGAC Program committees, ensuring the annual AdvanceCamp event continues to thrive and grow.

Mark your calendars for the 24th AdvanceCamp, taking place on September 27-28, 2024 at the Solano County Fairgrounds. The event attracts Scouts from across California and Nevada, and this merger promises to expand our reach even further.

Since its inception in 1998, AdvanceCamp has served over 30,000 Scouts, providing a platform for them to complete partials for unusual merit badges. The event has grown from 300 Scouts and 15 merit badges to a major annual gathering, thanks to the tireless efforts of Steve Hoagland, the Executive Director of AdvanceCamp.

Steve Hoagland shares, “I have been blessed over the years to work with many wonderful volunteers and now with the merger of AdvanceCamp into the wheel of GGAC success we feel a common goal and desire to see our Scouts working in the program expand.”

Tom Weibert, President of the GGAC Executive Board, echoes this sentiment, “AdvanceCamp is an amazing event that brings Scouts from all over together to work on Merit Badges and other advancement activities. This is exciting to be able to bring the strength of the AdvanceCamp team together with the structure and volunteers of the Council to ensure this event continues well into the future.”

As we continue to regain momentum post-COVID, we're excited to see the growing partnership between GGAC and AdvanceCamp, with more volunteers than ever before.

Registration for AdvanceCamp opens in early June, with more details about this year’s event coming soon.

Paddlesports 2024 Learning Opportunity!

HIGH ADVENTURE TEAM PRESENTS:

PADDLESPORTS 2024

Wish you could provide your unit a new adventure?

Something a little wild, something a little mild something a little too much fun???

TRY PADDLING!!!

This course provides the basics in planning and canoe handling for the novice or the experienced paddler enthusiast. The course covers how to plan in detail a safe event for your unit on the water, including such adventures as the Northern Tier, Boundary Waters, Lower Grand Canyon or local waters such as the American, the Russian or the Sacramento Rivers.

NEVER PADDLED BEFORE??? Fear not, we can get you down the river with confidence based upon the skills developed at our outdoor session. We begin with flatwater basic canoe control. In the afternoon me move to coordinated maneuvers between bow and stern paddlers. Safety and rescue are included in the event of a spill. River reading –the sense of how the river will move downstream giving you clues on where you should-or should not-be with the canoe will be highlighted. Evening session close the day with immersion hypothermia, shuttle logistics and paddling demonstration videos.

RIVER FUN-On Sunday we relocate from flat water to moving water along the American River. We begin by experimenting with eddy turns and ferries. Once we have these under our belt, we move downriver and play along the river catching each feature we can. Importantly, we practice how to rescue a paddler who has fallen out of his boat. We conclude the event with scouting the San Juan Rapid and running it with confidence. If you wish, you can run it again and again.

Indoor: May 8th from 7-9:30PM at the Council Office (if small group, Clayton, CA)

Outdoor: June 1-2nd at Folsom Lake SRA .

Indoor: June 5 from 7-9PM at the Council Office (if small group, Clayton, CA)
