Help needed with Outdoor Rally planned for Saturday 3/19

Help needed with Outdoor Rally planned for 3/19
We had to postpone Indoor Rally due to Covid restrictions and the ability to host large-scale indoor events is still a way off. So, as the weather is getting nicer and we now have an open weekend in March, the Mission Peak District Committee has decided to bring the Indoor Rally outside! As a replacement for the Spring Camporee, we are planning an “Outdoor Rally” in or near Fremont that would have a similar feel as our traditional Indoor Rally with head-to-head competition among troops. Cub Scouts and families will be able to observe the Troops and Crews compete in relays in a large, open park setting. We will plan to have an event or two for the Cub Scouts as well. Watch the newsletter for more details. An announcement will be made at the Roundtable on Thursday 2/10, and questions will be answered. Contact Jeff Airth at jeffair@hotmail.com

Spring Camporee March 18-20 Canceled

Spring Camporee Canceled
Regretfully we do not have enough staff leadership on board to host a quality Camporee experience and the district camping committee made the difficult decision to cancel Camporee for this spring. We can use help from Scouters in the district with the planning of these activities. We will be reaching out for support for future events. We are looking for troops or unit volunteers to help organize the Webelos Woods outing on May 20-22 at Rancho Los Mochos. We do not have a planning committee yet, so if a troop or two are looking for a great recruiting opportunity, please reach out and we can coordinate logistics. We are planning to host a Fall Camporee in late October, so keep a watch out for dates and calls for help! Contact Steve Rodriggs at steve.rodriggs@lmco.com

We are currently forming a leadership team to transform the Indoor Rally into an Outdoor Rally to be held in Fremont outside at a park. If you are interested in helping with the event, contact Jeff Airth if you can help, jeffair@hotmail.com

RLM Road Repaired - Schedule a Unit Outing

RLM Road Repaired - Schedule a Unit Outing
If the condition of the road into Rancho Los Mochos (RLM ) was a hurdle for you using the camp it is no longer. The road has been repaired. It might not be corvette ready, but certainly any standard passenger car. Roughly 200 Tons of rock spread, several palettes of concrete sprinkled watered in, and the road rolled. Culverts were repaired and added with catch basins. The extent and the quality of the work is amazing. This road is going to last for decades. A drive-through video post road repair is on Youtube.

Most people probably think of Blue Oak for camping. But also consider Deadwood with excellent Kybos and good water. Perfect for packs. If you need a short backpacking experience, consider Manzanita and park cars near the warehouse. Of course, there are trails you could take for a longer hiking experience.

Thanks to the many scouter volunteers from 10 different units that worked on the road for 4 days. Jim Dalton and Jaime Guerra from Troop 132 deserve special recognition for organizing and managing the project.

AB 506 Update - Mandated Reporter Training Due by 2/28

AB 506 Update - Mandated Reporter Training Due by 2/28
January 26.2022

GGAC Scouting Family:

Youth protection is a core value of the Golden Gate Area Council. We are continuing to update you with the latest news on California law AB 506, which adds layers of protection to our already robust BSA Youth Protection and Barriers to Abuse policies.

As noted in previous communications, all youth service organizations (e.g. Scout units, church groups, and sports teams) are required to meet AB 506 standards as of January 2022. Two of the AB 506 standards affect all adult volunteers, all employees, and many of our families.
  • Mandated Reporter Training from the State of California (complete before February 28)
  • Live Scan background check (coming soon)
Mandated Reporter Training is required in addition to our BSA Youth Protection Training. Volunteer leaders must complete the 2-hour training and upload your certificate by February 28, 2022. See the details of where to take the training and where to upload your certificate at GGAC California Scouting.

A Live Scan background check (the digital version of inked fingerprinting) will also be required for all volunteers and staff in the coming weeks. Our council is finalizing the process necessary to be able to account for the completion of these background checks. We will update you again when Live Scan is available.

All California BSA councils are working together to implement these requirements consistently and in a timely fashion. Our youth members require the commitment of all adults involved in the Scouting program to keep them safe. Thank you for your dedication to this core value and for protecting our youth.

Please refer to the California Scouting site, developed by all California councils, to follow the steps necessary for your training and background check. Click the “Learn More” link under Background Info Check on that page, look for the AB-506 Volunteer Process box, and complete steps 1 and 2 by February 28, 2022.

We will continue to update you on these requirements through special and regular GGAC eNews updates. Local information will continue to be available at GGAC Youth Protection. We appreciate your patience and assistance as we join all California Youth Service Organizations in improving youth protection.

Yours in Scouting,

Dan Walters, Council President - Mike Hale, Scout Executive - Michael Allison, Council Commissioner
