Scouting For Food Wrap-Up

Scouting For Food Wrap-Up

The final numbers are in

Mission Peak had a record year with over 52,900 pounds of food collected. The previous high was in 2019 with 33,890 pounds. We covered 38 of the 51 areas, used 72,000 door-hangers, and collected $920 in donations and over 1,400 items of clothing. Mission Peak scout units logged over 6,000 service hours for the 2 weekends.

Special thanks

To Curt Strommen and Lee Amon for helping all day at the collection site, to the parents and youth from Troop 154 for helping with the loading of the bins, to Troop 20 for transporting all the clothing to Union City, and to Holy Spirit Church for letting us use their parking lot.

Recap Nov Roundtable

Recap Nov Roundtable
Who would have known that there were so many things happening with the East Bay Regional Park District these days? Those that attended the Mission Peak November Roundtable do! On November 11th, many Mission Peak District leaders got to learn about the up-and-coming items within the East Bay Parks with Terry Noonan, a former Assistant Scoutmaster, and the Interpretive Parklands Unit Manager. Terry spoke to the group about the new campground that was built, the increase in demands for the parks during COVID, the different sites around the area where a unit can book for campouts, and so much more! One area where Terry spoke a lot about requesting Eagle Scout projects with the East Bay Parks District. He urged scouts to be flexible and not adamant on a certain project or location but rather reach out to see where the parks need assistance. He also made other great suggestions on the overall process of the requests and what time of day/year to reach out to the sites for these projects. He also mentioned starting on this request way ahead in advance since the process can take several months.

Terry also shared the instructions and procedure on how Scouts could propose an Eagle Scout  Service Project, (click on this link for more information). Finally, he finished his presentation talking to the attendees about the great “secret” locations and sites that many people do not know exist within the parks district. All those that attended were really motivated to go out and re-explore the East Bay Parks again!

In addition to proposing an Eagle Service Projects in the parks, you can volunteer for existing service that the park has already planned.  Download this flyer for instructions on how to find volunteer opportunities in EBRPD.

Thank you, Terry Noonan, for this great insider information about our amazing Northern California wilderness in our own backyard.
