Every youth deserves a trained leader
After new members have joined your Unit or after your Recharter is completed & adults are in new leadership positions; it is a great time to offer them training.
- You should offer some sort of custom orientation and welcome packet for both Adults and Scouts. Some Units host a “Mandatory New Parent Meeting” to distribute this information. If you need help putting together a custom packet for your Unit, contact Steve Conn,
- You should send all your registered Adult Leaders to their required positions specific classes (see below). These classes are open to all adults and Parents are encouraged to attend. Mission Peak typically offers these classes for both Cubs & Scout BSA Leaders each year in May. Registration is currently open for these classes. We are offering 2 classes each for Cubs and Scouts BSA. Click here to download a flyer explaining the training or Click here to register for these training sessions
- For more advanced leadership training, each year SFBAC offers Wood Badge. This class has already begun for 2020, but watch for notices about the 2021 course. Click here to learn more about Wood Badge.
Description of Position Specific Required & Additional Training Classes
Cub Leader Training
When Cub Scout Leader Position-Specific Training and Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) have both been completed, new Cub Scout Leaders will have the tools needed to implement an effective Scouting program.
- Cub Scout Leader Position-Specific Training has been developed to give new leaders the knowledge and skills, as well as to generate the enthusiasm, that they need to be successful. The course is designed to provide Cub Scout leaders with the basic information they need to successfully carry out the duties of their position. The Cub Scout Leader Position-Specific Training course brings together all of the basics of Cub Scout leadership into one course, with separate mini-modules to deal with position-specific topics (Den Leader, Cubmaster, and Pack Committee and Chair). It is made up of three modules.
- Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) is the Cub Scout leader training required for any Cub Scout den or pack outdoor event. The target participants are new Cub Scout leaders or volunteers who have minimal camping experience but want to plan and carry out an entry-level outdoor experience for the pack. This course is the introductory step in teaching leaders how to fulfill the promise of the outdoor program.
Scouts BSA Leader Training
When Scoutmaster Position-Specific training and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) have both been completed, new Scoutmasters will have the tools needed to implement an effective Scouting program.
- Scoutmaster Position-Specific training, course code S24, is the BSA’s initial level of training for leaders of Scout troops. It is designed for Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, and Junior Assistant Scoutmasters. However, Committee Members and other adults connected to a Scout Troop are encouraged to attend.
- Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS), course code S11, builds and expands on the concepts and themes introduced in Scoutmaster position-specific training and provides Scouters with the confidence to take youth into the outdoors. The target participants are Scouts BSA leaders who wish to become proficient in many of the basic outdoor skills through First Class rank. Along with Scoutmaster- Specifics, this course is required of all direct-contact leaders registered in a troop – to be considered “trained.” The leader (regardless of tenure) MUST attend and complete the course (this includes the camping component).
Additional Leadership Training
- Wood Badge is an advanced, national leadership course open only to Scouting volunteers and professionals. Scouters from Cub Scouting, Scouts BSA, Venturing, Sea Scouts, and Explorers, and district and council Scouters all are welcome and belong here. Listen to the April 2017 CubCast, “Tell Us More About Wood Badge,” to learn more about this advanced leadership training course.
