Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Emblem is available!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Emblem is available!
Did you know that Martin Luther King Jr. was a scout? From ages 11—13, Mr. King was registered as a member of Troop 151 in Atlanta. His father, Martin Luther King Sr., was the troop’s chartered organization representative. Let's get involved to honor our great scout and human leader!

Scouting America is proud to announce the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service emblem, designed to commemorate participation in the MLK National Day of Service. You’d be hard pressed to pick a better day to perform a Scout service project than on the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service.

Signed into law in 1994, the MLK National Day of Service federal legislation challenges all Americans to use the MLK holiday as a day of volunteer service in honor of the civil rights icon.

MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service, when all Americans are encouraged to volunteer to improve their communities. It is one of two national days of service, along with the September 11 National Day of Service.

What kind of service projects would qualify?

I’m having a hard time thinking of a Scouting community service project that couldn’t be an MLK Day of Service project.

AmeriCorps, the federal agency that coordinates the MLK Day of Service, has a list of ideas, and anyone who has participated in a Scouting service project will recognize most of them:
  • Serve meals at a homeless shelter.
  • Deliver meals to members of your community who are homebound.
  • Volunteer at a community garden.
  • Plant trees, grass and flowers in your community.
  • Volunteer at a local, state or national park.
  • Pick up trash in your community.
  • Support those recovering from natural disasters.
  • Participate in a clothing or coat drive.
  • Shovel snow, clear leaves or help with other yard maintenance tasks for an elderly neighbor.

It is for all the Scouts (Girls in the all BSA-Scout Program, Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Venturing, Explorer, Sea Scouts, and Learning for Life Scouts), Scout families, and Scout Leaders. This is the perfect opportunity to compliment your unit’s commitment “To serve God” & “Duty to God”.

Class A Uniform for all the scouts. Scout family members who are not registered with scouting can wear Casual/ but decent clothes. No shorts or skirts. Bring your unit flag. Some of the worship places require a head covering. Please bring a scarf or handkerchief to cover the head. Bring plenty of water and snacks.

“Houses of Worship” places are not within hiking distance. You need a car to go around or arrange for carpooling.

Spring Camporee Help is needed or the famous event gets cancelled!

Spring Camporee Help is needed or the famous event gets cancelled!
The Spring Camporee dates at RLM, scheduled for March 7-9, 2025, are being proposed for a Webelos Woods event instead. Divya Bellamkonda, <divya.rani.b@gmail.com>, and Tom Sims, <trsims@att.net>, have agreed to lead this effort, though they are still in the early planning stages.

To move forward, they need your enthusiastic support and participation. In particular, there are a few key positions they need to fill as soon as possible:
  • Kitchen Manager and Staff: All kitchen staff must be ServSafe certified or willing to take the training.
  • Camp Medic: They need someone with appropriate certification and training to serve as Camp Medic for the weekend.
Without these critical roles filled, they won’t be able to plan a successful event in the limited time left.

Additionally, based on previous events, they estimate that around 50 youth and adult staff would be needed to run a successful event for 150-200 participants.

They will be reaching out to the Fall Camporee youth leadership and Scouts who supported the recent Cub Day Camp, as all agree that continuing the commitment to youth-led events is essential.

Please let them know if you are interested in helping with any of these roles.  They need to make a decision whether or not to move forward, and they hope to do so by Friday, December 13th.

Thank you for your support!
