10/3 - 2nd annual Heroes in the Community event is THIS Saturday!!

10/3 - Save the date for the 2nd annual Heroes in the Community Event
Saturday, October 3, 2026 - 10am to 1pm

Silliman Center, 6800 Mowry Avenue, Newark, CA

The FREE event invites kids from Newark, Fremont, and Union City to meet “real-life heroes” — from public officials to first responders, utility workers, and nonprofit leaders — in a fun, interactive way. Scouts receive a “Bingo-like” card with stamps at each hero booth; collecting all stamps can earns a prize. This is also a great opportunity to get many requirements written off in your scouting requirements, like meeting police officers and firefighters, shaking hands with veterans, etc.

Key Participants & Organizations

  • City & State Leaders: Newark Mayor Mike Hannon, Assemblymember Alex Lee, City Councilmembers Julie del Catancio and Terrence Grindall
  • Law Enforcement & Safety: Newark Police Department, Alameda County Fire Department, FBI Outreach Program, CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) and the FBI

10/4 - Come learn more about the Ohlone Indians at this Coyote Hills event!

Great learning opportunity next Sunday, October 4th at Coyote Hills Regional Park!

The annual “Gathering of the Ohlone” event at Coyote Hills is an incredible event with a focus on the celebration and honor of the Ohlone Indians, the first stewards of this area.

There will be a variety of activities such as cultural demonstrations, hands-on activities, games, songs, food demonstrations and more! This event is great for all kids, especially for 3rd/4th graders, since it is tied into their curriculum on California Native Studies. I am pretty sure there are some Cub Scout elective adventures this activity could fall into but make sure to double-check with your leadership.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our local Newark students to learn about the culture that has lived here in Newark and the wider Bay Area for thousands of years.
