Troop 448 sold subscriptions to neighborhood residents for about $50 per year for the troop to put up a US flag in the front yard of families on 6 holidays during the year.
- President’s Day
- Flag Day
- Memorial Day
- 4th of July
- Labor Day
- Veterans Day or 9/11
Troop members would put up the flag early the morning and take down the flags before dark in the evening.
The troop would store the flags and replace flags as the flags wore out. The flags are mounted on 10’ long 1/2” electrical pipe conduit.
The troop would ask the resident where they wanted the flag to be located and would then drive a steel rod in the ground and then remove the steel rod and place a 2’ long PVC pipe in the hole and leave the PVC pipe permanently in the ground so that the flag could be easily placed and removed.
It does require commitment of families to organize the placement and removal of the flags every flag day.
Generally subscription residents really liked the regular flag placements.
The financial reward is great for those scouts who need to fund their scout camp or other scouting activities. If a Scout has 10 subscriptions for the year then at $50 per subscription, they have raised about $500 which funds scout camp and a few other scouting activities.
