The entire time they have been sheltered in place, Troop 273 Scouts have been working around the obstacles that the COVID-19 pandemic posed. They’ve had to change where they meet, how they meet, and even how they carry out gatherings like Courts of Honor.
This meant lots of changes. Lots of face masks and lots of hand sanitizer. They even had to consider how they would exchange the awards with each other. It was turning out to be quite a challenge. But as we all know, Scouts never back down from a good challenge.
They could wait until the pandemic ended or they could adjust and find a way through this. To that end, they figured it was possible to celebrate their achievements with a social-distancing Court of Honor.
It was originally planned as a drive-through Court of Honor in a parking lot at Karl-Nordvick park in Fremont. Scouts choose to line up and cheer instead. The Patrol Leaders Council planned and worked very hard to keep them separated.
All merit badges and rank patches were all signed with gloves on and individually packaged and left on the table. Scouts walked up to the table, picked their badges, and were cheered on by families standing at a distance.
By the time it was over, Troop 273 recognized 32 scouts in their Court of Honor and also gave away special awards for most service hours, most hiking miles, and most camping nights awards.
