1/28 & 1/29 – Tree Planting Volunteer Opportunity to start off the year!

Happy New Year and hope everyone is staying dry from the rain this week!
Our first Urban Forest Friends event for 2026 will be helping the Green Pocket Forest team plant a Miyawaki Forest at Schilling Elementary School in Newark, from Wednesday, January 28th to Thursday, January 29th.
This tree planting will be different:
Typical tree plantings: we plant 15-gallon trees that are already 5-8 feet tall, set apart from each other so that they have plenty of space to grow with space underneath for people to walk.
Miyawaki Forest: we plant thousands of small tree saplings and understory plants in a dense grid, so the competition for space causes them to grow very quickly. Within a few years, they become an ultra-dense “pocket forest”.
Both types of tree plantings help green our community and add to our tree canopy, but are suitable for different locations.
